Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

The syndrome of Zollinger-Ellison is a dangerous tumor disease, characterized as a triad of symptoms. The first is gastric hypersecretion. The second - peptic ulcers of the stomach, arising from the increased acidity of gastric juice, in uncharacteristic places. Healed ulcers reopen and can not be treated with conventional medications. The third - gastrinoma - is a tumor of islet cells of the pancreas. Gastrinoma can be located outside the pancreas, a bowl in the wall of the duodenum. This tumor can be located in other organs, for example, in bones, liver, heart, lymph nodes, ovaries.

Symptoms

  • Ulcers of the stomach, esophagus, small and duodenal ulcers.
  • Sometimes diarrhea, steatorrhea (fat content in feces).
  • Pain in the upper abdominal cavity.

Causes

The cause of this disease is a pancreatic tumor that produces gastrin, which stimulates the formation of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid). As a result of increasing the acidity of the stomach, ulcers of the stomach or intestines.

Treatment

First of all, this syndrome is treated with drugs that inhibit the intensive production of stomach acid. In the absence of metastases, the tumor is removed surgically. After the surgery, many patients recover completely. If there are metastases or effects of drugs that reduce the acidity of the stomach, is ineffective, you have to remove the entire stomach (gastrectomy).

The mechanism of pancreatic tumors is not entirely clear, so you can not do anything yourself.

With prolonged pain in the abdomen in the stomach, you need to see a doctor. First of all, patients who have previously undergone stomach surgery should apply to the doctor if they have symptoms typical of this disease.

Similar symptoms can be caused by other diseases. First of all, you need to establish an accurate diagnosis of the disease. To do this, take an analysis of gastric juice, perform gastroscopy, and determine the concentration of gastrin in the blood.

In addition, additional information is provided by angiographic images of blood vessels supplying blood to the stomach and pancreas, as well as various tests on which promise to produce gastric juice. Today, CT is widely used to detect tumors. Having established the diagnosis of the disease, the doctor will prescribe the necessary treatment or propose an operation. Medications that inhibit the formation of gastric acid, treat gastric infections.

Course of the disease

If you have pain in the upper abdominal cavity (especially if they were preceded by an infectious disease), you should see a doctor. Timely treatment reduces the likelihood of a tumor.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can affect a person of any age, but more often it occurs in people from 20 to 60 years. In the case of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, stomach and small intestine ulcers first appear that are not amenable to drug treatment. In addition, these ulcers appear in places that are not characteristic of the usual stomach ulcer. More than 80% of patients with the above symptoms were diagnosed with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome only after more than a year after the onset of the disease. The pancreatic tumor that caused the disease can metastasize, so its timely removal by surgery is necessary.

After the operation on the stomach, you must regularly visit your doctor. This must be done even if you feel well and you do not have any ailments.

Early diagnosis of the disease and the presence of a single tumor increase the probability of recovery of the patient. With late diagnosis and delayed treatment of the syndrome in 60% of patients show malignant tumors of the pancreas.
