Tests and examinations for gout diagnosis

Medicine2

A joint disease like gout is known from ancient times, it used to be called as “the Disease of Kings”, since this ailment affected only those people, who had access to stodgy and fat foot. Nowadays, gout is very widespread disease and affects people of different social groups.

This disease is associated with protein metabolism disorder that causes accumulation of uric acid in organism. Then the uric acid crystallizes which destroys joint structure, and as a result causes disorganization of locomotor system.Blood test

CAUSES

Gout is divided into 2 types in medicine, so it has two causative factors: primary and secondary.

Primary gout may occur due to 2 causes:

  • excessive producing of uric acid, its excess influences kidneys , which decreases capanility of the kidneys to excrete the uric acid. In this case, the excess acid deposits in joints and soft tissue.
  • kidneys disease – they are not capable to filtrate normal amount of urate, which provokes its accumulation in organism.

Secondary gout is not the independent disease, but an after-effect of previous diseases (psoriasis, kidney failure etc.), a complication in other words.

Factors that caused primary gout are mostly unhealthy nutrition and bad habits. For example, when a person consumes too much fat food, the level of uric acid is increased which healthy kidneys are not capable to filtrate. And bad habits decrease functionality of all organs, which includes kidneys as well. So the accumulation and deposition of urates occurred even in an ordinary condition.

EXAMS AND TESTSDifferential diagnostics

Since gout is not only an independent disease, but the complication – treatment of this disease can be administered only after diagnostics. The examination for gout must be combined, since it may detect signs, stage of the disease and its cause. These methods of diagnostics include:

Blood test

This test identifies levels of seromucoid, fibrin, sialic acids, and C-reactive protein. Besides, blood analysis determines the excess level of urine in blood. This measure must be 460 μmol/l in male patients, and 300 μmol/l in female. However, the blood test is not capable to diagnose gout completely, thus other test are necessary.

Urine analysis

This test allows identifying cause of disease development according to the level of uric acid and acidity level. If the analysis gave a positive result, it’s needed to define the daily value of uric acid in order to administer the appropriate treatment.

Synovial fluid arthrocentesis

Normally, synovial fluid has no color and similar to water composition. If the synovial fluid has other color or became viscous, it says about a disorder of joint function. The analysis synovial fluid will show whether the level of uric acid and neutrophilic leukocytes, which help with diagnosis of the disease.

Complete blood analysis (CBC)

According to this analysis the doctors defines the level of neutrophils in blood that confirms or denies occurrence of inflammation in organism.

X-rayGout of the first toe (x-ray image)

Such method of diagnostics is provided for leg gout. With the help of the analysis and an image it is easy to define gout: locations of uric acid deposits will be white spots on the image.

Biopsy

This method provides removal of crystalized deposits of uric acid. The procedure can specify the type of the disease and gout itself.

TEST PREPARATIONS

It’s better to prepare an organism for analysis, if the patient wants tests to be correct and doubtless. Patients who are going to pass the blood test are not recommended to consume alcohol, products, which contain vitamin C and caffeine, and take aspirin or diuretics.

False indicators

If the patient has ignored the rules above, tests will show increased level of uric acid and accordingly wrong diagnosis and wrong treatment will be administered. If the patient started self-treatment and takes medication, which reduce the level of urate in organism so it will be lower than really.

Patients need to follow some recommendations, if they want to see actual results of tests:

  • don’t eat any food for 8 hours before testing;
  • blood test is not available during or after treatment;
  • keep a diet for a few days before supposed date of test, eat only vegetable food and milk products;
  • it’s also recommended to completely give up alcohol, any organism stress, and decrease coffee, tea and bean products consuming.

Even though chronic gout can’t be cured, correct diagnostics can remove gout pain, reduce external signs of the disease, and extend a delay between relapse.
